"The Flow of Music" Musical Poem

Beat of the drums.
The fast pace movement.
Looking into the eyes
of the people who knew
how to do it.
Some of them are fast,
some of them are slow,
but it is very obvious
on which way their
feet go. Bouncing around
the room to a certain
rhythm in the air, some people
don't understand
but still know its there.
A word called
music, in the ears of many
can be very strong.
Boogy to your beat where
you can't go wrong.

Grandma Love - "A Life Well Lived" Poem

Why have you always loved me?
Is it because you are my grandma?
Why have you always cared for me?
Is it because you are my grandma?
Why have you never let anything bad happen to me?
Is it because you are my grandma?
Why have you always done everything to make sure I'm happy?
Your so special in your own way,
In and out.
But now your getting older
And even when your gone,
you'll still be honored in my life.

Without your Love - "A Love" Poem

How would I live without your love?
Without your bright smile?
Without the feel of the waves in your hair?
Everyday of my life.
Without waking up in the morning and not seeing your face?
Without having just you.
Could I just have one last kiss.....
 before you leave.

When I think of Florida - "Trips" Poem

Beautiful Florida;
Bright sun, bright bright sun!
Shining on the beach, making the water glisten.

Light breezes blowing in and out.
Palm trees swaying side to side.

Smokin hot temperatures
Feet all in the flaming hot sand
Lots of swimming and sand castles.
Family, friends and food.
Shopping
It's always fun when your having too much fun!
But at the same time, my visit goes by really fast and I never wanna leave.

Which way? - "Failing" Poem

Which way are you going to take

Wandering what happened to my life
What turn did I not take.
What choice did I not make.
How did I get stuck alone?
Was it the drugs.
Was it the alcohol.
Why me God?
Why me.

Sunrise: A Day in Life Poem

5 am.

Dreaming,  wrapped up in the covers, feeling so warm and every problem just seems to float away.

6 am.
A little soft voice yelling "Rise and Shine, time for school."
What happened to the short break we have each week?
......................
Ah, it went so fast. All the problems I had the night before seem to creep back up to me.
Just a look out the window,
Its still dark and I have to get up, just to be on time for my bus.
No matter how much I dread it, there's no choice.
Its always the same routine just sometimes mixed up in different orders.
Put clothes on, brush my teeth, wash my face, do my hair and there's just a little time to
glance in the mirror before my day actually begins.
Then the last words I say to my family is “Bye"
When I'm on my way to the bus stop
And it still leaves me wondering everyday,  will that be the last time I see my family?

Letter to readers

Dear, reader:

Hi, my name is Atley Green. I'm a 9th grader at Carbondale Community High School and in Mrs. Hayes English I class. My favorite things to do are playing basketball, listening to music and chilling at the pool with family and friends. But in English were discussing poetry, but poetry isn't my favorite, I never really understood how to write it. But were assigned to think and type out our own poetry book. At first I thought that would be hard but later I learned that I enjoyed it. Maybe I will do this more often.

My favorite poem I wrote was the "Musical" poem. I love music, when I think of music, I think of rhythm, beat, motion and people enjoying themselves. Thats pretty much what the poem is describing. The poem just seemed to flow right, I just really enjoyed making this poem.

My least favorite poem I wrote was the "A day in the life" Poem. I really couldn't think of anything that would be good for that one. At first, I didn't really know how to start it, a whole bunch of beginning sentences popped up but didn't flow right. So I just used what I could think of and made a "Routine" poem.

During the poetry unit I have learned many things. My whole view towards poetry has changed. By writing and thinking of my own poems, I've learned that its not that hard. I always thought it was hard to write one because I thought they had to rhyme. But by making my own poetry book, I've learned different.

By writing the poems in this book, I've learned that anyone can be a poet. It doesn't take  much work. It might take some thinking and usage of descriptive and powerful words. But it could also be a simple laid back poem. Either one is fine.

Hunger Games:)

Dystopian:  Hunger Games is a great and suspenseful dystopian novel. Dystopian is a imaginary place where everything is bad as it can be. Hunger Games is a dystopian novel because I don't think anyone would want to live there, there's no fun, and they are playing in a life or death situation. Hunger Games is a war book because it has kids throwing knives, arrows, and anything that they have to do to win. The capitol is really mean and they force one girl and one boy between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the 74th annual Hunger Games. Katniss Everdeen is a 16 year old young teenager that is trying to get the highest in the twelve districts. But Katniss wasn't originally supposed to be competing. Her sister, Prim, was picked but she couldn't possibly let her compete and she volunteered to go in her place. At first Katniss and Petta Mellark are being great friends by helping each other out and everything. But that all changes when Katniss gets higher then him he tries to go against her because there are only two spots that can be taken up. Who do you think will make it to the finals?

Satire: Hunger Games has many types of satire in it. Satire is the ridicule of some vice or imperfection. An attack on someone or something by making it look ridiculous or worthy of scorn. It often uses irony, sarcasm, and exaggeration. Here are some examples of satire in the book Hunger Games. Peeta Mellark is named after bread which is a satire because they were always making fun of his name and calling him names like the bread man. Cato is killed by the mutants which were in turn the tributes he murdered. Peeta camouflages himself by using the one skill Katniss made fun of him for in training. The Hunger Games is a very dangerous and serious game, especially for some teens.

Allusion: Hunger games is a novel with several allusions. Allusions are a reference to a well known person, place, thing or another piece of literature. One of the examples of an allusion was the concept of fighting to the death in the book, which was borrowed from Greek mythology. The Greek soldiers used to volunteer to play "The Games" and be put in a big arena to fight to the death, while the crowds watched. Also Cinna is from Cinna the poet, from Julius Caesar, Shakespeare. Portia is also from Julius Caesar, Cinna and Portia were hung alongside each other. Some other names are Cato, Octavia, and Flavia (Collins, 58). The allusions are all scattered somewhere in the book.

Allegory: Just the Hunger Games itself symbolizes something. The capital had to come up with a way to show the districts that they have complete control over them. They came up with the Hunger Games as a punishment, taking their children, turning them into killers, and killing them. And it is even worse, because the other people in the districts and the capital go crazy over it and bet on how long the tributes will live. The people aren't allowed to show their anger either, because the capital will kill any sign of rebellion. All and all, the hunger games represent the capitals power over the districts and their weakness. There are also other symbols in The Hunger Games, such as the mockingjay.

Conflicts in Your Life Can also Help You Out

In this novel, the conflict causes the main character, Tyler Miller, to change. Tyler had never been one of those popular guys growing up. But that all changed once Tyler was arrested for graffitiing the school. People started to recognize him as a bad boy, not some lame. But Tyler had many conflicts and problems that he encountered in his life. It was the graffiti thing, it was him having to stand up to different personalities at school and everywhere he went. Also there was the thing that he had with Bethany. But Tyler toughed it out and made it through it all.
At school, some people cheered for Tyler but others thought the opposite. Some thought he was a jerk and immature. But as time went on, after Tyler had accidently cut Bethany's foot at the business party.  Bethany and Tyler began to  bond together, and that is what Tyler had wanted for a long time. But just that one party that they went to, ruined everything they ever had. Tyler was blamed for a lot of things like putting videos of her nude on the internet. He had to go through police coming to his house on nights he and his family didn't expect. The police taking his computer, checking his room and cell phone. But Tyler was tough and the end was a happy ending. Thats how conflict can create a character like Tyler. He was building up the endurance to live and not die. So when something worse comes up, he will survive and have confidence that he can win. But in all his conflicts in this story, he didn't give up, he fought back and won.

Is Bullying Really Necessary?

We watched a video in class it was called; Bullied: A Student, a School, and a Case that Made History. Just like the title says, it was all about bullying. I thought it was extremely sad and heartbreaking. Especially at the very beginning of the video. Where they had showed a little boy in a football uniform, probably 11 years old. They had said that, he had hung himself. All becuase he was a homosexual, the people around him and so-called friends called him names and teased him. He just couldn't take it anymore, it just hurts to hear about little kids committing suicide. That kind of stuff shouldn't happen, they have there whole life ahead of them.
     http://www.tolerance.org/magazine/number-39-spring-2011/bully-bullied-bystanderand-beyond

The article I read was really good. It was titled; Bully, Bullied, Bystander...and Beyond. The first few sentences of the article were really sad, it said, "A 14-year-old hangs herself. a 19-year-old jumps off a bridge. A 13-year-old shoots himself. Another loads his backpack with stones and leaps into a river. Still another swallows her father’s prescription meds to get rid of the pain and humiliation. A 17-year-old is found hanging outside her bedroom window. Two more 11-year-old boys kill themselves within 10 days of each other." All those innocent children, all for what? Bullying. They feel they have no one to turn to, no way to tell others. So they turn the violence inward with a tragic and final exit. The article talks about the bystanders and how they are also guilty as the bully. If you just watch or even try to encourage the bully. You are part of bullying the victim.

Image Chef

The quote I used was "Miller men were disciplined, Miller men followed rules. Miller men toughed it out; they ate dirt & went for the kill" On page 21 in Twisted. I picked this quote because I thought it showed the goals for the Miller men and Tyler. What Miller men should live up to and expect to do and be. But Tyler wasnt exactly following that. But he was disciplined for what he had done, he did tough it out to get it over with. Tyler wasn't really a positive person but as the story progressed  he began to change.

The other quote I used was "People had ignored me when I was Nerd Boy but that changed after I got arrested." That was on the very very first page. I picked the arrow as the image because I thought it symbolized as moving on with life. People looked the other way at Tyler before he got arrested. But when he got arrested, there were still people that ignored him, but most came to him. Some thought that it was cool for what he did, graffiti on the school and getting arresting and all. There were a lot of different feelings toward Tyler.

Why???

Isn't it hard to stare at a girl if she's dressed like that? If you get offended when someone stares at you, why do you dress like that then? I think that behavior is just childish. You chose to dress scantily going to SCHOOL, really school though? Then you get upset when the boys stare or don't stare or glance at you. I understand you getting upset when they don't stare at you because that's probably why your dressing like that in the first place. Your friends probably dress like that too and maybe you want to be just like them. But if your dressing like that and still get mad when they stare at you, that's just crazy!
The school shouldn't let them come to school dressed like that in the first place. There should be some kind of dress codes. It shouldn't be that strict, like my school we have rules against dress code but they are very flexible. But sometimes I might see a girl walking down a hallway and I will be like "that is too short" and then a boy will be like "not its not." The girl wearing it doesn't think anything of it. Or there might be too much cleavage showing, that is not necessary. Its just immature, I'm not saying for everything to be covered up but respect yourself.

Be Safe!!!

A few days ago, the speaker Josh Gunderson came to our school and spoke about the postive and negative effects of facebook. But the whole purpose was to inform us about the negative. He also talked to us about sexting and cyberbulling. His website is http://www.haveyoumetjosh.com/, it has a lot of information about different things. I had a great experience with Josh, it was fun to listen to him but his sense of humor kept me in thought with the message. All his jokes and stories lined up with the message that he was trying to get across us and you could be laughing but then remember everything he told us. Josh is a great speaker and I would love to hear him speak again.
Josh told us the negative things on facebook. He told us not to reveal personal information, like on facebook don't have all your business out in the open, for people to read. Don't post personal things like my parents are leaving and I'm going to be alone all weekend. There are crazy people out in the world, there could be someone following your page. I know I'm guilty for that too, sometimes you don't recognize until its too late. He told us not to talk to people you don't know or accept friend requests for people that you have only met once. Don't be a bully to anyone, even watch what you say or text to someone. Even if it wasn't meant that way, others might interpret it that way. He taught us a lot of the things that other people have already taught and lectured to us about but he sent his message in an interesting way.
